The Power to Follow Your Every Move

Publication Date:july 16 2005
Page Number:pp.28-29
Database: SIRS Researcher

Things I know
  • Galileo is a European project set up by the European Commission and the European Space Agency and has 30 in total--stronger signals and a range of commercial services for different needs.

  • as diverse as academia, security, surveying and government will meet at the UK's National Physical Laboratory in south-west London to discuss the social implications of Galileo once it goes live in 2008.
  • Having 30 additional satellites in orbit will reduce the number of areas without a signal. And its more powerful signals mean it will sometimes be possible to keep track of offenders while they are indoors..

Two things I want to know
  • How is it going to be in the future when galileo comes out in 2008?
What will the advantages and disadvantage of this system coming out?

Things I found interesting
That know we have a rival over g.p.s information towards europe.

Trackers Watch for Dangerous 'Space Junk'

Source: Air force link
Author: Master Sgt. Scott King
Publication Date: May 2, 2006
Page Number: n,p
Database: Air force department (usaf)

Things I know

  • Each site is responsible for tracking thousands of known man-made deep-space objects in orbit around the Earth at an altitude of 10,000 to 45,000 kilometers.

  • Space is the ultimate high ground, giving us the ability to communicate over long distances and determine exact locations through the Global Positioning System.

  • These telescopes are able to see objects 10,000 times dimmer than the human eye can detect.

Two things I want to know

Who agreed on buliding this system?
Are we going to have a space police?

Things I found interesting
The Deep STARE system is able to track multiple satellites in the field of view.

Organic Materials Spotted High Above Titan's Surface

Source: Jet Propulsion Laboratory News Release
Author:
Publication Date: April 25, 2005
Page Number: n,p
Database: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Things I know

  • Cassini spacecraft came within 1,027 kilometers (638 miles) of the moon's surface and found that the outer layer of the thick, hazy atmosphere is brimming with complex hydrocarbons,
  • Hydrocarbons containing as many as seven carbon atoms were observed, as well as nitrogen-containing hydrocarbons (nitriles). Titan's atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen, followed by methane, the simplest hydrocarbon.
  • Atmospheres of planets and their satellites in the outer solar system, while containing methane and molecular nitrogen, are largely devoid of oxygen.

Two things I want to know

Who wanted to know about this planet?
And who funded the money to do this research?

Things I found interesting
The nitrogen and methane are expected to form complex hydrocarbons in a process induced by sunlight or energetic particles from Saturn's magnetosphere.
