I like your frequent reference to your research and reading. In addition you have created links to that material.
From your paper I can conclude that camera surveillance can catch people after they have committed a crime. You made the point that this technology can PREVENT crime and I would have liked you to write more to make that case.
Did you ever wonder about the pros and cons of the use of video surveillance? There are many questions that absorbs around the topic of video surveillance or just surveillance. The first thing that comes to mind when you hear video surveillance might be criminals, terrorists, robbers, privacy, etc… And the technology behind surveillance is expanding.
There were many arguments made from this topic because this technology can be good or bad depending on the situation. When I watched this show called “Cheaters” they used various types of surveillances and the sizes also varied. It was amazing how this type of surveillance can help determine a spouse if their lover cheated on them or not. And 99.9% of the time, they are correct because of the help of video surveillance. When I watched another show called “America’s Most Wanted”, they use a lot of surveillance too. They can use internet surveillance, video surveillance or cameras. The technology actually helped the viewers of the show capture the image of the criminal and gave of hints/tips and we help the police officers and the workers of AMW capture criminals.
The use of surveillance can protect the society locally and federally. In a local community, the use of surveillance can prevent thieves or murderers by schools, houses or other locations. Like according to this article I read from sirs called "The Screening of America", they stated that central park is the safest urban park in the United States. So because of this, police officers are suggesting to place surveillances into parks as well as other cities. This technology can also make the people feel safer around where they live. Also, capturing criminals from local places can help the country federally. The military and government uses surveillance and they alert the country if there is a huge crime going on. Also from the article above, they said that peoples' first reactions when they see a surveillance camera, they smile while recording them. This statement reminded me of AMW again when this criminal smiled into the camera after a brutal murder.
According to this article, Drawing a Line: Too Many Unseen Cameras?, when video surveillance was first introduced to Honolulu, Hawaii, they captured thieves around their finest mall. They began to become protective over it's cities by placing 6 new surveillances. This device has many features that helped Honolulu capture their greatest thieves by zooming in their faces, license plate and even small letters on packages. Other than that, the companies that sell video surveillances has benefited from international terrorism because more and more are concerned about the area and wants to record everyone’s actions around their areas. Another interesting fact is that majority of the people agree that the use of video surveillance would not decrease any time soon. Also, there are no moves made for limiting the private or government videotaping. What I found out in this article, The New Surveillance, is that they made a new program, TIP which stands for "Turn in a Pusher" and it is found in hundreds of communities. What I discovered from this article is that the federal cabinet agencies provides hotlines for any sexual or abusement. This device was a success because a Texas sergeant said that they had husbands turning in wives and vise versa and even mothers turning in their sons. Children also turn in their parents for drug using. And in this article, Private Eyes, a man from Detroit videotaped a girl gang beating up two bystanders which would come in handy for proof for the police officers. And a mother videotaped herself giving birth to her kids just to show them in the future what she had went through.
But the use of video surveillance can also have it's cons. Gary Marx, a sociologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, stated, "Some people welcome the cameras. It makes them feel more secure. Other people feel they are invaded....They feel that when they are out in a public area, they don't want to be recorded." I agree to this statement because although it provides protection, it also invades other privacies and some people don't like the fact that they are being taped while doing their daily routines. As I continued my research, there were many arguments made. Also in the article Private Eyes, people use it for other disgusting matter and post them online for others to download which gives bad influences to little kids. The fifth amendment states that nothing of private property should be used for public use. And the fourth amendment states that people should have the right to feel safe/secure in their houses or other locations. From my own knowledge, when I watched the show, Maury, I found out that some perverts would hide small surveillance in a woman's apartment and just record what they do and get pleasure off of it.
In conclusion, I have to agree with the PRO side because although it doesn't give us privacy, this technology can save a life one day or thousands. Because of its unique features and sizes, it still does the same thing which records and whatever the matter is, we can always give it to the police for them to capture the bad guys. Because of this technology it helped save many communities from being scared because they would worry if there are still thieves. But thanks to this invention, they captured many.
