When our civilization didn't have the technology of GPS, we got lost and a lot of times took the long routes. Now with the help of GSP we're much more mobile and quicker. The Army have been using GPS very well, for example the operation Desert Storm. USA troops were in the middle of the desert. Where for miles and miles the horizon would look the same, if GPS wasn't yet in use for them, they would get lost and go around in circle for hours if not days. GPS in Military is to me a top weapon, even if it doesn't fire missels or shoot M4 rounds at soldiers. GPS can guide a missel to the precise location that it's supposed to land. GPS will now be used much more often by everybody. Satellites has definately had an impact in many aspects of our society.
Let's pretend satellites didn't exist. How would the army get around in Iraq without doing loads of friendly fire and being lost? Satellites improved the amount of friendly fire greatly. Before the satellites help, soldiers were in such hype and scared for their life of turning into a corner and seeing an enemy sniper just waiting for them to pop their head out so they can take them down. A lot of times they also shot each other because they were so lost in a brand new terrain. Today we have satellites to help them out in that case. Satellites can view them from upstairs and let them know each of their step where they could be enemy hiding and also where friendly units are locate. Its just like a chess game, and the soldiers are the pieces. I still think the friendly fire occurs even with the satellite's help, because GPS locators inside cars and tanks can have malfunction and the satellite can detect them as an enemy since they didn't have the friendly signal of the GPS.
The war with Iraq, one of the biggest advantages between Iraq and USA was that USA had satellites to help them visualize everything. Air Force also used satellites very often. Satellites would detect any air craft above Iraq. Commanders at the operations center used the map to reroute bombers the moment targets emerged, that was incredibly fast, something we wouldn't be able to do without the help of satellites, or at least would take us a long time to tell where exactly the position is.
